Fathers Day Activities And Gifts
Father’s Day is celebrated on Sunday June 15th, 2008, Father’s Day was first observed in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd,of Washington, first proposed the idea of a “father’s day” in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honour her father, William Smart, who was widowed when his wife died in childbirth after their sixth child was born. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself. Mrs. Dodd wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, her father’s birthday.
It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Coming almost sixty years after Mother’s Day had been proclaimed a National day of observance.
This year why not turn the tables on Fathers’ Day.
Take the initiative; take it over and make your kids feel special.
Fathers’ Day is an opportunity for dads to create a life-long memory. Children who have a full memory bank of happy memories to draw on are more likely to be resilient as adolescents and to bounce back from bad times. (Besides, here’s a chance to be a kid again and a hero.)
Announce that this Fathers’ Day you want to celebrate the fact that you have such a great ‘team’. Tell them well beforehand that you’d like breakfast in bed and a handmade card, but after that you will have an announcement to make.
The plan
If a man has a plan, then he will make things happen. We men like to solve problems and then pull things off. I also believe in the fun factor for Dads. Fathers – make sure that rules, routines and ridiculousness are all part of your family interactions. Tell them you are planning a party to celebrate being their Dad, and you would like them all to be ready in the kitchen at 9.30am dressed. In the meantime, nip down to the hot bread shop to collect morning tea.
When they report, explain how proud you are to be their father and that to celebrate Fathers’ Day you are going to throw a party that will include taking them on a mystery trail and will finish with dinner. (The trail is really a glorified car rally with a bit of a scavenger hunt built in.) Then explain the plan.
Some options to include in your day
- operate a voucher system: The vouchers can be cashed in along the way and could be for an ice-cream, their favourite song to be played, or a 15-minute game of cricket, soccer or whatever
- incorporate ridiculousness: If water-pistols, water-balloons or bubble-gum are banned in your house, then just for once, stage a water-fight or a bubble-blowing competition.
- mystery tour: Give each child a coin and set off in the car. As you reach a corner, the leader for the first ½ hour flips his coin – for tails you turn left – for heads you turn right. Do this with each child during the afternoon. See where you end up! Pretending to be lost will entertain your children enormously! (Try not to get lost!)
- fill the day with fun: Give your children a list of things you can do and allow each child to be a leader for that event
- a game of mini golf
- rollerblading
- a visit to the zoo or an interactive event
- lunch at a fast food store
The party should end with a meal of your choosing, where each child is toasted with some special drink and individually told why Dad appreciates them. Encourage your children to respond with their own toast back to Dad. A simple but creative party such as this wonderfully honours each child and leaves them with the message, “Dad’s so proud to have me in his team.”
